High
Balinese Word
INDEPENDENT FORM OF
NUMBERS
ENGLISH BALINESE INDONESIAN
one sa (Low), siki (High) satu
two dua (1), kalih (h) dua
three telu (1), tiga (b) tiga
four empat empat
five lima lima
six pitu nam
seven (e)narn tujuh
eight kutus delapan
nine sia sembilan
ten dasa. sepuluh
and bulan, 'month"
(except as it is used for a lunar calendar month), Thus, one can say dua
wai, or kutus wai, in Low Balinese, meaning "two days," or "eight
days." One says pitu bulan, or sia bulan to mean "seven' months"
or "nine months," if talking about months in general, as on
the Gregorian calendar. But the independent form of the number cannot
be used with the High Balinese word "day," rahina. Here, and
with all other nouns, one must use the "dependent" form of the
number.
DEPENDENT FORM OF NUMBERS
I a-; prefix to head
word
2 duang (1); kalih (h)
3 telung (1); tigang (b)
4 petang
5 limang
6 nem
7 pitung
8 kutus (ulung)
9 sia (sangang)
10 dasa
One cannot say dua
meter for "two meters," but rather, duang meter, "Three
kilograms" is telung kilo, and so on. One of something is 'expressed
by prefixing a to the word, as ameter, "one meter"; akilo, "one
kilogram" Note that the dependent forms have High and Low words for
the numbers 2 and 3 and that some of the dependent forms are the same
a, 'he independent forms. With 8 and 9 there are. Two ways in which the
dependent form may be expressed. Usually the first form is used for the
number shown in the table only. "Eight meters" would be kutus
meter, the form shown within parentheses is used for multiples thus 80
is ulung dasa and 9,000 is sangang tali.
There is yet another form of the numbers. The "reduplicative"
form is used when the number follows the noun that it modifies
REDUPLICATIVE FORM

3 tetelu (0, tetiga (h)
4 patpat
5 lalima, lelima

8 akutus
