Island of Bali
BALI IS A TINY VOLCANIC ISLAND,
about the size of the state of Delaware, tucked between Java and Lombok
in the middle of the 3,400 mile long Indonesian archipelago. The island's
mild and steady climate, fertile volcanic soil, many and fast-moving rivers,
and plentiful and consistent rains combine to create, in the eyes of most
travelers, a physical paradise. The balmy, paradisiacal conditions that
Bali's 2.5 million inhabitants and many visitors enjoy are a product of
the climactic patterns and geology of the Indonesian region.
The island, roughly mushroom shaped, covers about 5,000 square kilometers
(2,100 sq. mi.) 150 kilometers (90 mi) east-west and 80 kilometers (50
mi.) north-south. The southern extension of the island, a rocky and peninsula
called the Bukit is kept from being an island in its own right by a tiny
isthmus the island of Nusa Penida, geologically similar to the Bukit,
lies off Bali's southeast coast.
Bali is just 600 miles south of
the equator, latitude 8' 4' to 8' 52' south, and at longitude 114' 26'
to 115' 42' cast, is about one-third of the way around the globe from
Greenwich. Bali's proximity to the equator keeps the island consistently
warm year-round, with a mean temperature of 27.2' C (81.0' F). Nor is
there much daily fluctuation in temperature-in Denpasar the greatest daily
temperature fluctuation takes place in April, and the range is a mere
6.9' C (12' F). Being in the Southern Hemisphere, December is Bali's warmest
month, but the average December temperature is only 2.2' C (4.0 F) warmer
than that of the coolest month, July. Bali has a remarkably pleasant and
steady temperature.
